Virginia Colwell works in a range of media including multimedia installations, works on paper,and short videos. Currently she is working on two series of investigation. The first is about contemporary ideas of the sublime through images of natural disasters and geological phenomena. The second is a musing on monument forms in urban space such as military parades, architecture, and sculpture.

The latter series works in conjunction with her recently presented graduate thesis in Architecture and Urban Theory entitled, Looking Like the Past: Abstraction, the Archive, and Simulation in Contemporary Monuments. Colwell did her previous masters work with the Metropolis Masters Program in Barcelona, Spain while teaching art and architecture history and working as an artist-in-residence at Hangar, a multimedia art center.
